Category: Brakes

Q: How can I get more stopping power out of the front brakes?
A: You can improve the stopping power of the front brake by bleeding the brake lines, since many people have found that the factory does not do a good job of getting all the air out of the lines. Next step up would be to install braided stainless steel brake lines. Finally, you can replace the pads with better ones. Check the Maintenance Tips page for instructions.

Q: What is the stock main jet size?
A: The stock jets are #108.
----------------------------------------------------

Q: How can I get rid of the throttle hesitation?
A: The carbs are jetted lean from the factory, and the pilot circuit needs to be richer to eliminate the throttle hesitation. An aftermarket jet kit is a good solution. Some of the hesitation can be helped by turning out the mixture screws on the carbs. See the Maintenance page for a "how to" on this.

Q: Where can I get a jet kit for the ZR-7?
A: See the Accessories page for more information, and the Maintenance Tips page for a "how to" on installing a jet kit.

Q: How can I keep my battery charged when the bike is stored over winter?

Category: Engine

Q: Should I follow the break-in guidelines on a new bike?
A: It's up to you how you treat your bike, but following the break-in procedures will help to ensure a long life for your engine. Kawasaki recommends an RPM restriction of 4,000 for the first 500 miles, then 6,000 for the next 500 miles. An occasional jump over those limits probably won't do any damage, just don't run it to redline. The most important thing is to keep from lugging the engine at lower RPM's, in other words don't open the throttle wide open at 1500 rpm. Also avoid keeping the engine at a constant RPM for long periods of time. Make sure you do give it wide open throttle every once in a while to make sure the rings seat properly. You don't need to baby the bike, just use common sense and it will last a lifetime.
----------------------------------------------------

Q: How often should be valves be adjusted?
A: The U.S. manual recommends 500 miles, and then every 6,000 miles. The European manual recommends 7,500 miles. No one has explained this discrepancy yet, and many people have skipped the 500 mile adjustment in the U.S. However, some people have gone through with the valve check at 500 miles and found tight valves, so you'll have to decide for yourself if you want to take the chance on skipping it. If you'd like to do your own valve adjustment, check the Maintenance Tips page for a guide.

Q: My 03 zr7 with 3500 miles is using about .5 L of oil in 1500 miles. Seems kind of high to me. I do a lot of commuting --10 miles one way. Seems to run good. Its not leaking any oil. Thanks, Matt

Category: Exhaust

Q: What is the rattling sound I hear coming from the front of the engine?
A: It's possible that the exhaust collars holding the exhaust pipes onto the engine have come loose. This is a common problem with the ZR-7, and you should check the torque on them periodically. The correct torque is 20 ft-lbs.
----------------------------------------------------

Q: Who makes an aftermarket exhaust for the ZR-7?
A: Many companies offer both slip-ons and full exhuasts for the ZR-7. See the Accessories page for links to lots of vendors.
----------------------------------------------------

Q: Is there a way to make the stock pipe louder?
A: Yes, you can drill or punch holes in the baffle in the stock pipe to get a louder sound.
----------------------------------------------------

Q: How can I get rid of the popping sound when I roll off the throttle with my aftermarket pipe?
A: Removing the Exhaust Gas Reburn valve will do the trick. This may cause problems with your local vehicle inspection folks, so attempt at your own risk. Instructions can be found on the Maintenance page.

Category: Fuel Tank

Q: What is that clanking sound when my gas tank is full?
A: The fuel gauge float in the tank bangs against the side of the tank when the tank is full. It's nothing to worry about.
----------------------------------------------------

Q: What is that whining sound I sometimes hear coming from the fuel tank?
A: There's a small vent hole that lets air in and out of the tank to equalize the pressure between the tank and the outside air. On hot days, the tank gets warm and needs to vent some air out, which is what the sound is. It's perfectly normal.
----------------------------------------------------

Q: Why is there no "Off" position on the fuel petcock?
A: The ZR-7 has a vacuum operated petcock (as do most Kawasaki's) so there's no need to turn it off. You should leave it in the "On" position for normal situations. If you run out of fuel in the "On" position and the bike starts to sputter, quickly switch the lever to the "Reserve" position. That will give you enough fuel to make it to the filling station. Make sure you switch it back to "On" after filling the tank. The "Pri" position is used to override the vacuum operation and opens the fuel valve fully even when the engine isn't running. If you have the switch in the "Pri" position when removing the fuel tank from the bike, you'll have fuel everywhere!
----------------------------------------------------

Q: There is a question on why there is not an off position on the petcock, which explains the reason for no off section. When do you place the lever on pri? Thank you!
A:

Q: My fuel gauge reads "E" way before I get to reserve. Can that be fixed?
A: You can use a resistor to recalibrate the fuel gauge so that it hits reserve at "E". Check out the Maintenance Tips page for instructions.

Q: what is the difference between the zr-7 and zr-7S???
A: The ZR-7 was released ouside the US in 1999 as a naked bike, and came to the US in 2000. In 2001, the ZR-7S came to the US as a faired model. It was still offered in both 7 and 7S configuraion outside of the US in 2000. Since then, the 7S with the fairing has been the only model available. Besides the fairing there are really no significant differences between the 2 models.

Categories

Category: Seat

Q: I'm a shorty and can't quite sit flat footed on my ZR-7S. What options do I have to gain another 1/2" to 1" closer to the ground?
A: There are several option for lowering the seat height. In Europe, Kawasaki offers a lower replacement seat. You can also reshape your stock seat following the tips available on the Maintenance page here on ZR-7.com.
----------------------------------------------------

Categories

Category: Speedometer

Q: My speedometer reads higher than I'm actually going, why?
A: Unfortunately, that's a common trait for many motorcycles. The speedo on the ZR-7 seems to read about 5-10% higher than true speed. There's no easy way to recalibrate the speedomter, it would require a new gear drive that no one seems to make yet.
----------------------------------------------------

Categories

Category: Suspension

Q: Is there a way to get less dive when I hit the brakes hard?
A: Yes, there are several things you can do to stiffen the front suspension. Options include: bleeding the brakes to get the air out of the fluid, replacing with a higher weight fork oil, compressing the springs with a PVC spacer, and installing a progressive spring kit.
----------------------------------------------------

Q: Should I adjust the rear shock when carrying a passenger?
A: Normally the answer is yes, unless you've already got the shock set stiff. You want to have enough preload set to keep the back end from wallowing in corners with the passenger on board. The factory setting of "4" is usually not enough unless you and your passenger are very light.

Categories

Category: Windshields

Q: I am looking for something taller than the sport tourning shield offered by Zero Gravity. I understand these are available in Europe. Anyone have contact information?
A: Also, to the owner with the "multi-color" shield on his/her 2003 model....plastics and coatings can exibit this effect depending upon when and how they were manufactured. Also, exposure to certain chemicals can do the same thing. I doubt Kawasaki would call this a "defect" but you can always try.

Categories

Category: ZR7s Fairing "Buzz"

Q: What causes the fairing to buzz at around 2-3k rpm?
A: After 4 years of ownership I've finally found the definitive answer.... forget all the others... it's the silver plastic headlight reflector loose in the headlight housing. The cure...pull out the headlight plug and pull off the rubber cover and push in some foam rubber to stop it rattling, so simple. Phil, Derbyshire
