Product Review and Install: Kawasaki Rack & Backrest

Note: All of the images below can be viewed full-size by clicking on them.

I ordered the Kawasaki Rear Rack and Backrest to make passenger riding on my ZR-7 more comfortable.  I checked the aftermarket, and wasn't able to find any other options for a backrest for the ZR-7.  The first mistake I made was ordering just the backrest.  Once I got it, I realized that the backrest mounts directly to the rear rack, so you must have that piece also.  You can order the parts directly from Kawasaki at www.buykawasaki.com, or from your Kawasaki dealer.  The backrest lists for $79.95, and the rack lists for $84.95, so the total package runs $164.90.  This is EXTREMELY expensive!!!  These parts should cost no more than $50, so Kawasaki is totally gouging the consumer on this one!  I hope the aftermarket picks up and offers some other options.

The installation process is pretty simple, as you'll see below.

Tools You'll Need:

  • 4mm, 5mm, and 6mm Allen Wrenches
  • Pliers (locking preferred) or a socket

The parts come with mounting hardware as seen here.

Step 1: Remove the rear grabhandle bolts with a 6mm Allen Wrench.  There are black plastic caps over the bolts when the bike is delivered.  Just pry these off with a fingernail or screwdriver, and then remove the bolts.

Step 2: Assemble the backrest mounting plate to the rack, using the bolts, washers and nuts provided.

Step 3: Mount the rack assembly to the grabhandle mounting points with the included bolts and aluminum spacers.  The spacers hold the rack up so it won't touch the tailpiece.

Step 4: Mount the backrest pad to the bracket, using the small flathead screws provided.

Step 5: You're done!

You'll have to decide if you like the look or not, I haven't made up my mind yet.  The rack is very sturdy, and I would be comfortable putting several pounds on it.  Unfortunately, the rack is quite small so nothing too big would even fit on it.  The vinyl on the backrest pad does not match the vinyl on the seat very well, it's quite smooth as compared to the rough surface of the seat.  It definitely provides more support for the passenger, and gives them a more secure ride.  Luckily, it's easily removable and remountable, so I may not have to leave it on all the time.
